Visual Literacy Techniques
What influences our MEANING MAKING of PICTURES?
1. CONTEXT OF PICTURES / PHOTO
This can be thought of as the source of the picture, for example: a family album, advertising, magazines, travel book, holiday.
2. WRITTEN INFORMATION
This anchors the meaning of a picture - captions, speech bubbles, headlines.
3. KNOWLEDGE
The about of knowledge the person brings to the picture.
4. THE BELIEF SYSTEM OF THE VIEWER
The values, attitudes and culture of the person/audience.
QUESTIONS TO ASK WHEN VIEWNG A PICTURE / ADVERTISEMENT....
What is in the background / foreground?
How have characters been positioned in relation to each other? Are they close together or far apart? Are they looking at each other or away from each other? What are we told about the moods and feelings in the picture?
